Creating a System Restore Point

Windows XP and later versions of the Windows operating system provide a useful utility designed to protect you and your system from malfunction or corruption when installing new software or modifying the machine's operating environment.

The system restore point logs the computer's current configuration. Thus, should anything go wrong while, for example, installing new software, you have a fall-back position allowing you to return to where you were before making modifications.

To set a restore point, click Start > Help and Support. The welcome screen will be displayed. Click on "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore". The following screen will be displayed:

In the event that your system is corrupted, this is also the screen you would use to return to a pervious safe restore point.

Click "Create a restore point" and Next>.
The following screen will be displayed:

Type a description for the restore point e.g. "Installing Widget Software".
Click Create.

The following screen will be displayed:

This screen confirms that the restore point has been created.
Click Home to return to the Help and Support Centre or Close to end the procedure.
